Gum disease is an infection of the gums and bones that surround and support the teeth.  Approximately 80% of American adults have some level of gum disease, and many don't know it.  Gum disease is the number one cause of tooth loss in adults and can destroy your mouth and has been linked to serious systemic health problems like heart attacks and dementia.  To determine if you have gum disease, Dr. Rippy and his hygienist will look for bleeding gums, buildups of plaque and tartar above and below the gums, areas where your gums are shrinking from your teeth, pockets between teeth and gums, and bad breath.  If we find any indication of gum disease or any signs that you might be susceptible to developing the progressive condition, we will reccomend steps to stop the disease and reverse its effects.
