What to Expect at your First Visit

Whether you have been visiting a dentist for years or this will be the first appointment, Dr. Rippy and his team at Rippy Family Dentistry want to make sure that you feel relaxed, comfortable, and confident.  The care of your smile is our highest concern, and we look forward to welcoming you to our office.

During your first visit, Dr. Rippy will:

  • Take time to fully understand your concerns and expectations

  • Perform a complete medical and dental history

  • Take x-rays (if needed)

  • Complete an initial dental exam

  • Explain your treatment options and discuss which option(s) will best meet your needs

  • Answer any questions that you may have

After your initial exam, it is important to continue with regular check-ups as they will help your teeth and gums stay healthy and can prevent painful problems from developing in the future.  Some things to expect during a routine dental exam include:

Thorough Cleaning

Cleanings, performed by a dental professional, will remove plaque and tartar that, if left untreated, can cause Gingivitis (gum disease), cavities, Halitosis (bad breath), and other, more complex, problems. These regular cleanings are among the most critical elements to maintaining good oral health.

Full Examination

After your teeth are properly cleaned, Dr. Rippy will perform a thorough examination of your teeth, gums, and mouth to look for signs of disease or other problems.  Our goal is to prevent problems from becoming serious by identifying and treating them as soon as possible.

X-rays

Depending on age, risk of disease, and symptoms, x-rays may be recommended as they can help diagnose problems not visible during the dental exam such as damage to jawbones, impacted teeth, abscesses, cysts, tumors, and decay between the teeth.

How Long Should I Wait Between Visits?

Under normal circumstances, patients should have a cleaning and check-up every 6 months.  If further treatment is required, we will work with you to schedule a convenient appointment before you leave our office.

Proper Care Between Checkups

In between check-ups, it is important to establish and maintain good oral hygiene habits.  Brush your teeth three times a day (generally after each meal) and floss at least once daily.  Should you need assistance learning how to properly care for your teeth between checkups, please ask our team. We will be delighted to show you!
